Chick-fil-A: The Golden Child of Customer Experience

When it comes to fast food that Americans absolutely adore, Chick-fil-A sits firmly at the top of the food chain. More than anything, Chick-fil-A provides a guest experience that customers love. If you go to McDonald’s you’re happy to just get what you ordered; at Chick-fil-A you expect a bit more – and you get it. Chick-fil-A brought “dining” to fast-food. The difference isn’t just in their famous chicken sandwich or waffle fries, but in the entire atmosphere they’ve created.
There’s a difference between going out to eat and dining. Dining is more of an experience that leaves people feeling good. And Chick-fil-A excels at that. They have enough volume to afford really good employees – and a lot of them. That makes it easier to provide a great experience. It’s no wonder Americans keep coming back for more of that Southern hospitality served with a side of crispy chicken.
Chipotle: The Speed and Customization King

Chipotle has become a fan favorite in large part because its menu items are highly customizable, and they’re served impressively fast. They can make your burrito as you simply walk down the line. You can also order online and it’s typically ready when you get there. This Mexican-inspired chain has mastered the art of assembly-line efficiency while still making customers feel like they’re getting something made just for them.
The numbers tell the story of American love for Chipotle pretty clearly. Three-quarters of Chipotle’s sales are from the chain’s app. That’s not just convenience—it’s a testament to how much people trust the brand to deliver exactly what they want, exactly when they want it. When you can order your go-to bowl with extra guac from your phone and have it ready in minutes, that’s the kind of modern fast food experience Americans crave.
Dairy Queen: The Surprising Number One

Here’s something that might shock you: It’s been a long and flavorful journey, but we’ve finally arrived at the #1 most popular fast-food chain in America in 2024: Dairy Queen. Founded in 1940 in Joliet, Ill., DQ is of course best known for its frosty treats from innovative classic soft-serve to the iconic Blizzard. Yes, you read that right—Dairy Queen topped the popularity charts, beating out all the burger giants and chicken champions.
Nowadays, the DQ brand offers consumers far more than dessert. The menu is stacked with additional options like Chicken Finger Baskets and Signature Stackburgers. Americans have discovered that DQ isn’t just about ice cream anymore. They’ve evolved into a full-service fast food destination that happens to serve the best desserts in the business, making them irresistible to customers who want both a meal and a treat.
Cava: The Mediterranean Darling

This Mediterranean chain is the fresh, hot thing. For one thing, it’s perceived as healthier-for-you food. And, they’re big, bold flavors. Cava’s CEO, Brett Schulman, has also proven to be successful from coast to coast, and everywhere in between. In a world where Americans are becoming more health-conscious, Cava hit the perfect sweet spot between nutritious and delicious.
What makes Cava especially appealing is how it taps into the growing demand for fresh, customizable meals without sacrificing flavor. With $399.2 billion in revenue in 2023, the fast food industry is responding to consumer demands for healthier options. This shift in preferences is pushing chains to innovate, creating a new generation of menu items that satisfy both convenience-seeking and health-conscious consumers. Cava represents exactly what modern American diners want—fast food that doesn’t make them feel guilty.
Raising Cane’s: The Chicken Chain Champion

As far as chicken chains go, Raising Cane’s seems to be a better option in 2025 than KFC. That’s the main competition in terms of chains that specialize in chicken served at drive-thrus. Raising Cane’s is simply a newer, better, ingredient-play version of KFC – which, sadly, is now such an old chain that it’s atrophied. Sometimes being the new kid on the block really pays off.
Raising Cane’s is the new, fresh player among chicken chains; all it has to do is be the new kid on the block and talk about having better sauce and ingredients than its competition. Other chicken brands, including Raising Cane’s, Wingstop, and Popeyes, gained popularity. “Smaller, popular brands like Raising Cane’s and Wingstop are proving that creative marketing, digital engagement, and focusing on core strengths can challenge even the most established chains,” Forrest Morgeson, associate professor of marketing at Michigan State University and director of research emeritus at the ACSI, says.
Five Guys: The Premium Burger Experience

Five Guys just barely missed the top 10 this year, but don’t be mistaken, customers love the brand. Known for its made-to-order burgers and french fries cooked in peanut oil, this fast-food chain delivers big on flavor. Americans have shown they’re willing to pay a premium for quality, and Five Guys delivers exactly that with their never-frozen beef and hand-cut fries.
What sets Five Guys apart isn’t just the food—it’s the experience of watching your burger being made fresh while you wait, surrounded by bags of potatoes and peanuts you can munch on for free. They’ve created a burger experience that feels more like a premium restaurant than typical fast food, and Americans are here for it. Even though prices run higher than traditional chains, customers keep coming back because they know exactly what they’re getting: quality without compromise.
McDonald’s: The Fading Golden Arches

Here’s where things get surprising—McDonald’s, the global fast-food giant, is losing its grip on American hearts. High prices and a listeria outbreak negatively impacted McDonald’s sales, which were down 1.4% according to fourth-quarter earnings reports. “Our performance in 2024 did not meet our expectations,” McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski said on a call with analysts. For a chain that once seemed untouchable, these struggles represent a seismic shift in the fast-food landscape.
Fast-food has gone from a cheap option to a luxury item, resulting in people staying home. “Prices on basic items like McDonald’s cheeseburgers and Chick-fil-A nuggets have risen as much as 200% in less than five years with dire consequences for the lower- and middle-class families who make up much of the fast food customer base,” says Dan O’Donnell of the free market think tank the MacIver Institute. When your Big Mac combo costs nearly what people used to spend on a sit-down meal, you’ve lost the core value proposition that made you famous.
KFC: The Colonel’s Declining Empire

KFC’s customer satisfaction majorly declined, down 5% to 77. Other chicken brands, including Raising Cane’s, Wingstop, and Popeyes, gained popularity. The original chicken chain that once ruled the roost is now watching newer competitors eat their lunch. It’s a classic case of an aging brand that hasn’t kept up with changing consumer expectations.
Yum Brands (YUM) , which owns Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hut, has just revealed in its second-quarter earnings report for 2024 that its net income declined by 12%. While Taco Bell’s U.S. same-store sales increased by 5% during the quarter compared to the same time period last year, KFC’s shrunk by 5%, and Pizza Hut’s declined by 1%. In addition, all three fast-food chains also faced dwindling same-store international sales. The Colonel’s recipe for success seems to have gotten stale, and Americans are voting with their wallets by choosing fresher alternatives that offer better quality and service.
The fast-food landscape in America tells a fascinating story of changing tastes and expectations. While some chains thrive by focusing on experience, customization, and quality, others struggle to adapt to a market that no longer accepts mediocrity just because it’s cheap. “Restaurants can’t simply rely on their traditional playbooks anymore,” says Morgeson. “The brands that succeed will be the ones that adapt quickly to shifting tastes without compromising consistency or experience,” says Morgeson. Which side of this divide will your favorite chain land on?
