Starbucks: The Lost Third Place

Starbucks was once characterized by its inviting and comfortable environment, complete with cozy armchairs and warm, rich décor, where customers enjoyed spending hours working, socializing, or simply relaxing with a good book while savoring their favorite coffee. In recent years, the interior of Starbucks stores has undergone a dramatic transformation, with previously cozy nooks and armchairs replaced by minimalistic, clinical, and uninviting spaces dominated by wooden stools and an abundance of empty space, leaving many customers yearning for the homely, welcoming atmosphere that once defined Starbucks. In the third quarter of 2024, Starbucks’ same-store sales fell by seven percent, and the number of customers visiting its North American stores decreased by ten percent. The new CEO acknowledges that the customer experience can feel transactional, menus can feel overwhelming, product is inconsistent, the wait too long or the handoff too hectic.

Chipotle: The Portion Controversy

Chipotle customers were right in their complaints about skimpy portion sizes at some locations, with CEO Brian Niccol disclosing that a company investigation found that one in ten of its restaurants were too meager with their servings after rumors of shrunken portions circulated on social media, including from influential food reviewers on TikTok. In June 2024, a Wells Fargo analyst ordered and weighed seventy-five Chipotle burrito bowls with white rice, black beans, chicken, pico de gallo, cheese and lettuce across eight New York City locations, discovering portions varied widely, with some locations serving bowls that weighed thirty-three percent more than others. The fast-casual chain got its start in 1993 and enjoyed a meteoric rise in popularity due to fans’ love for its fresh ingredients, reasonable prices, customization opportunities, and massive portions, but in recent years, scores of fans have taken to social media to complain of stingier portions, inconsistent quality, rising prices, and an overall decline in the Chipotle experience.

According to the American Consumer Satisfaction Index, Denny’s is the worst-rated full-service restaurant chain in 2025, with a rating of seventy-five out of one hundred, and its customer satisfaction score has gone down since 2024. According to Consumer Affairs, which has more than four hundred ratings and reviews of the diner, customers take issue with the long wait times and inconsistent service quality, with some customers noting that it took more than an hour to be seated, while others claim their waitress all but ignored them. Denny’s experienced a terrible 2024 and announced it was closing fifty of its restaurants in just a few months, citing underperformance as the main reason, which followed a difficult period for the brand that saw a large number of its restaurants stop operating round-the-clock in a bid to save money, and then stated it was closing one hundred further restaurants throughout 2025, with one hundred eighty restaurants due to close in just twenty-four months.

Sonic Drive-In: Every Problem Under the Sun

Sonic scored a disappointing seventy-three points in 2025, falling well short of the seventy-nine point average for quick-service restaurants, and has fallen considerably from last year’s score of seventy-six, suggesting things are heading downhill fast. On Trustpilot, Sonic’s reputation takes an even harder hit with a dismal one-and-a-half star rating, with customers reporting dealing with rude staff, shakes that arrive runny instead of thick, an ordering system and app that is often not working, orders regularly being wrong, and complaints about undercooked food. One customer’s experience captures the extent of Sonic’s problems: after ordering through the app, she waited a staggering fifty minutes at a pickup stall only to receive a meal where literally nothing was right, with the onion rings arriving black and burnt, her chicken wrap featuring soggy lettuce with hardly any chicken, served cold, and even the Sprite tasting like water with bubbles.

Chili’s: Falling Short of Expectations

The American Customer Satisfaction Index gives Chili’s a score of seventy-eight, not terrible but falling short of the overall score of eighty-two for sit-down restaurants, and what’s more worrying is that it’s dropped from a score of eighty just last year, with the ACSI finding that around spring of 2024 Chili’s rolled out new promotions and menu items aimed at attracting McDonald’s customers. Based on the ACSI, the chain has dropped a couple of points between 2024 and 2025, with many reviews reporting food quality issues, customers complaining that many of their meals lacked flavor, were burnt, had unexpected spice, and some have reported issues like potato soup that arrived without potatoes or chicken quesadillas that were severely lacking in chicken. The ACSI gives Chili’s a score of seventy-eight, and it’s dropped from a score of eighty just last year, with the ACSI digging into what’s behind this decline and finding that around spring of 2024 Chili’s rolled out new promotions and menu items aimed at attracting McDonald’s customers, and these customers came in with different expectations than Chili’s typical crowd, with this shift along with the rapid changes happening at the chain causing its decline.

Little Caesars: Service and Safety Concerns

On Consumer Affairs, this pizza chain holds a dismal one-point-two rating, with most of the problems seeming to stem from poor customer service, with reviewers describing staff members who are not just unhelpful but actively dismissive, and customers reporting employees talking to them with their backs turned, avoiding eye contact, and showing an unwillingness to answer basic questions. Health and safety concerns also surface, with complaints about staff not wearing gloves while handling food, and while it is not mandatory to wear gloves in some states, it doesn’t make customers feel confident about a place if they don’t, with the pattern continuing on Trustpilot, where Little Caesars scores just one-point-eight stars. The sea of one-star reviews tells a troubling story: customers report food poisoning incidents, an app that routinely overcharges or simply doesn’t work, and a number of complaints about orders being mixed up or subpar quality.
