Every few years, a kitchen gadget takes the world by storm. It gets plastered across social media, fills holiday gift guides, and somehow ends up in the back of every drawer within twelve months. The cycle is relentless. According to Business Research Insights, the kitchen tools market was valued at more than $31 billion globally in 2024, making it one of the most prolific consumer categories on earth. Yet the size of that market doesn’t mean everything in it deserves a spot on your counter. Chefs and culinary experts are now pushing back on a wave of once-hyped gadgets that, they say, never really earned their keep.

Few kitchen appliances have ever sparked the kind of devotion the Instant Pot once commanded. The Instant Pot was an unconventional viral marketing success story, with owners often describing themselves as “addicts” or “cult members,” and by November 2017, its Facebook group had over 750,000 members. The device blended pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker, steamer, and sauté pan into one unit, and millions of home cooks were convinced it would change their lives. For a while, it really did seem that way.

The fall, however, was steep and public. Dollar and unit sales declined roughly 20% in the period ending in April, according to NPD Group, and net sales dropped 21.9% in the first quarter of fiscal 2023 relative to the same period the prior year – the seventh consecutive quarter of year-over-year sales contraction. On June 12, 2023, Instant Brands filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after high interest rates and waning access to credit made its debts unsustainable. Demand was also impacted by changes in customer preferences for novel cooking techniques and nutrition trends – for example, a shift in popularity towards air fryers caused interest in multi-cookers to decline. The device that once felt revolutionary now sits unused in kitchen cabinets across the country.

The spiralizer had its golden age during the peak low-carb, vegetable-noodle craze. It promised guilt-free pasta nights and TikTok-worthy vegetable ribbons. Spiralizers continue to trend on TikTok because they make vegetables more exciting, and turning zucchini and other vegetables into noodles became a popular healthy cooking hack. Brands leaned hard into the trend, and at one point, it felt like every health-conscious home cook had one sitting on a shelf. The novelty was real – for about three weeks.

Professional chefs, though, were never impressed. When a sous-chef was asked to sort through her home drawer, the toss pile included the spiralizer, rice cooker, pasta drying rack, cherry pitter, salad spinner, and juicer – while the keep pile contained just an 8-inch chef’s knife, paring knife, peeler, microplane, big stainless bowl, colander, and heavy skillet. The verdict from professionals is consistent: a sharp knife does the same job faster, and the spiralizer is notoriously difficult to clean. Instead of multi-use products, the industry seems to take the opposite approach, marketing a unique tool as the absolute best way to do one single kitchen task, and there is also a drive to infuse tools with technological advances that are often unnecessary, making many gadgets needlessly complicated.

When avocado toast became the defining food of a generation, it was only a matter of time before someone invented a dedicated avocado slicer. The three-in-one tool promised to cut, pit, and slice the fruit in one smooth motion, eliminating the infamous “avocado hand” injury. It went viral repeatedly, featured on gift guides, and was for a time one of the most impulse-purchased small kitchen tools on the market. Millions of people bought one, used it a handful of times, and quietly shelved it.

Chefs do not need an avocado slicer – they grab a knife, twist, scoop, and move on. The slicer was marketed as the end of “avocado hand,” but it usually made the job messier. You don’t need a separate tool just for avocados – cutting, pitting, and slicing one is just as easy with a knife and spoon, and avocados are pricey to begin with, so there’s no reason to waste money and drawer space on a slicer. Professional kitchens pass on the garlic press, avocado slicer, egg separator, electric can opener, panini press, melon baller, and apple corer because each one duplicates a move your knife, hand, or pan already handles.

The electric can opener was once considered a mark of a fully equipped kitchen. It sat proudly on countertops throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, and for a generation of home cooks, it felt like a genuine upgrade from the manual alternative. Brands continued selling them in enormous numbers well into the 2010s. The pitch was simple: less effort, faster results, no hand cramps. Many households bought into that promise without ever questioning whether the tradeoffs were worth it.

Electric can openers eat counter space when a compact manual one lives happily in a drawer for a decade. Chefs today prefer a simple manual opener – it is reliable, easy to clean, and small enough to tuck away, with no cords, no counter clutter, and no fuss. In professional kitchens, simplicity wins, and the fewer moving parts, the fewer things that can go wrong. Electric can openers are a lot more compact than they used to be, so the clunky countertop gadgets of yesteryear are no longer necessary unless they serve an accessibility need – and if you are looking to declutter your countertops, losing the big upright electric can opener is an easy choice.

The dedicated egg cooker had a real moment in the spotlight. Compact, affordable, and marketed as foolproof, it promised perfectly boiled or poached eggs every single time without babysitting a pot of water. Younger consumers aged 18 to 29 prioritize toaster ovens and air fryers, yet single-function appliances like standalone egg cookers rode viral social media waves to unexpected popularity. The rapid egg cooker in particular became a TikTok sensation, with countless videos showing steam-poached eggs emerging in minutes. Sales spiked repeatedly during pandemic-era home cooking binges.

The reality is that a saucepan and water do the same job, and chefs have been saying so for years. Microwave egg poachers are handy in theory but unappetizing in practice – what is intended to produce delicious results each time winds up yielding hard, rubbery eggs far too often, and making poached eggs in a pot of boiling water does take practice, but once you get the hang of it, it’s a quick and easy way to cook without having to dig out and clean an extra gadget. Kitchen gadget trends can be enticing, but purchasing without assessing long-term value often results in regret, and the smart approach is to invest gradually, selecting gadgets that truly enhance your workflow. The egg cooker is a classic case study in the gap between a gadget’s marketing promise and its actual place in daily cooking life.

Bread machines enjoyed enormous popularity from the 1990s through the early 2010s, promising freshly baked loaves with minimal effort. You dumped in the ingredients, pressed a button, and woke up to the smell of fresh bread – at least, that was the idea. Bread machines are an upscale kitchen gadget ranging from $80 to $150 or more, and they simply aren’t worth the price or the counter space for most people. The machines returned to trend briefly during the COVID-19 baking boom, but that resurgence faded just as fast as sourdough starter became a punchline.

Your kitchen already has a built-in bread-making machine – it’s called an oven. A quick bread or the now-famous no-knead bread recipe requires only basic ingredients, a simple technique, and the result doesn’t demand a pricey, specialized machine the size of a small child. The broader shift in the kitchen market reinforces this attitude toward single-purpose bulk appliances. As John Davies, marketing manager at Smeg, explains: “While an air fryer is convenient for those starting their cooking journey, today’s ovens are increasingly multi-functional. It’s less about choosing one or the other and more about finding an oven that can do it all.” This trend reflects a move towards quality over quantity. Multifunctional and space-saving solutions are becoming increasingly popular, catering to those who want to maximize their kitchen’s potential, and all-in-one kitchen appliances have become indispensable cooking tools, offering multiple functions that save time, space, and energy. The bread machine, with its single purpose and enormous footprint, is the opposite of everything the modern kitchen values.
