The James Beard Foundation revealed its 2026 Restaurant and Chef Award finalists on March 31, narrowing down semifinalists to a select group of top talents across the nation. These nominees represent the pinnacle of culinary achievement, from innovative chefs to enduring hospitality leaders. The announcement sets the stage for the awards ceremony on June 15 in Chicago.[1][2]

Visionary Restaurateurs and Master Chefs Lead the Pack

Srijith Gopinathan and Ayesha Thapar of the Cal-India Collective earned a nod in Outstanding Restaurateur for their work at Ettan, Copra, Eylan, and Little Blue Door in California. They compete alongside Meherwan and Molly Irani of Chai Pani Restaurant Group in Asheville, North Carolina; Donald Link and Stephen Stryjewski of Link Restaurant Group in New Orleans; Hugo Ortega and Tracy Vaught of H Town Restaurant Group in Houston; and Dana Street, associated with Fore Street and others in Portland, Maine.

In Outstanding Chef, Gilberto Cetina of Holbox in Los Angeles vied for recognition, joined by Niki Nakayama of n/naka, also in Los Angeles; Josh Niernberg of Bin 707 Foodbar in Grand Junction, Colorado; David Standridge of The Shipwright’s Daughter in Mystic, Connecticut; and Michael Tusk of Quince in San Francisco.[1]

New Restaurants and Emerging Talents Shine Bright

Best New Restaurant featured 10 contenders, including 1033 Omakase in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Agnes and Sherman in Houston, Texas; Anjin in Kansas City, Missouri; Emmett in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Ki in Los Angeles; Lei in New York; Maison Bar à Vins in Washington, D.C.; Merci in Charleston, South Carolina; Robin in St. Louis, Missouri; and Tamba in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Emerging Chef highlighted Fátima Juárez of Komal in Los Angeles; E.J. Lagasse of Emeril’s in New Orleans; Rasheeda Purdie of Ramen by Ra in New York; Bailey Sullivan of Monteverde Restaurant & Pastificio in Chicago; and Adrian Torres of Maximo in West University Place, Texas. These rising stars demonstrated fresh approaches in their respective scenes.[1]

Regional Best Chefs Showcase Nationwide Diversity

The Best Chef categories spanned 11 regions, each with five nominees. In California, Dave Beran of Seline in Santa Monica stood out alongside Harrison Cheney of Sons & Daughters in San Francisco, Sarah Cooper and Alan Hsu of Sun Moon Studio in Oakland, Kwang Uh of Baroo in Los Angeles, and Daisy Ryan of Bell’s in Los Alamos.

Similar excellence appeared in Mountain, New York State, Northeast, Northwest and Pacific, South, and Southeast regions, reflecting the breadth of American culinary innovation.[1]

Bakeries, Bars, and Beverage Programs Earn Accolades

Outstanding Bakery nominees included Cultured in Sister Bay, Wisconsin; Fire Island Rustic Bakeshop in Anchorage, Alaska; Super Secret Ice Cream in Bethlehem, New Hampshire; Weltons Tiny Bakeshop in Charleston, South Carolina; and Wild Crumb in Bozeman, Montana.

Outstanding Bar contenders were Bow & Arrow Brewing Co. in Albuquerque, New Mexico; The Lovers Bar at Friday Saturday Sunday in Philadelphia; Onyx Coffee Lab in Rogers, Arkansas; Scotch Lodge in Portland, Oregon; and Smuggler’s Cove in San Francisco. Best New Bar highlighted spots like Bar Chenin in Detroit, Michigan, and Clemente Bar in New York.

Other categories such as Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker, Outstanding Hospitality, Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program, and professionals in beverage and cocktail service rounded out the diverse field.[1]

Path to the Podium and Beyond

Judges, including independent subcommittees, selected these finalists from semifinalists announced in January. The process emphasized ethics, with reviews for compliance to the foundation’s code. Winners will gather at the Lyric Opera of Chicago for the June 15 gala, hosted by Choose Chicago and the Illinois Restaurant Association.[2]
