It sounds like something out of a bizarre medical documentary, but it’s absolutely true. Victoria Beckham, 50, has reportedly eaten the same meal of steamed fish and vegetables for 25 years, according to her husband David Beckham. The revelation came during David’s appearance on the River Cafe Table 4 podcast, where he admitted to being married to someone with the most restrictive eating habits imaginable.

When you think about it, that’s roughly 9,125 identical dinners. The same grilled fish, the same steamed vegetables, day after day, year after year. Victoria Beckham rarely deviates from her go-to meal of fish and steamed vegetables, according to her husband David. “Since I met her she only eats grilled fish, steamed vegetables. She will very rarely deviate from that.”

Victoria’s extreme eating habits don’t start with dinner. Every single morning begins with what many would consider torture. Mrs Beckham ditches the traditional early morning drink of tea in favour of two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. “Each morning, the first thing I do is have three tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, followed by a mug of hot water and lemon and multiple coffees,” she told Net-A-Porter.

Victoria captioned the photo. “Be brave! Two tbsp first thing on an empty tummy!” Her apple cider vinegar of choice isn’t cheap either – she uses Bragg Organic Apple Cider Vinegar with the ‘Mother’, which costs around seven pounds at Holland & Barrett. According to Hello magazine, Beckham avoids tea and coffee in the morning and instead has two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar on an empty stomach followed by some warm lemon water before she drinks or eats anything. Studies have shown that apple cider vinegar can help improve blood sugars.

After the acidic wake-up call, Victoria moves on to what she calls her “monster green smoothie.” This isn’t your average breakfast drink. The combination sounds healthy on paper, but people who’ve tried replicating it describe the taste as challenging. One journalist who followed Victoria’s diet for a week admitted she needed to add a banana to make it palatable.

Eating three to four avocados a day “adds significant calories and fats, which might not be necessary or beneficial for everyone,” Keatley says. “Simply consuming three to four avocados a day alone could be a lot of fat for one’s body to break down,” she says.

Tests showed she had “off the scale” levels of toxic mercury in her blood. This shocking discovery forced her to make some changes to her otherwise unchanging diet.

She has now altered her diet to include more salmon and less swordfish and tuna, which contain the highly poisonous methylmercury. A source said: “Victoria had off the scale levels of mercury. So doctors gave her a liver flush to help rid the body of toxins.” Some side effects of mercury poisoning could include anxiety, depression, numbness, tremors, memory problems, and potentially even more devastating effects. Not only does eating only fish as a source of protein edge out other nutrient-dense foods with a variety of health benefits, but it also could put one at a higher risk of mercury poisoning.

When confronted about her husband’s revelation, Victoria didn’t deny it but tried to make it sound less extreme. “Meanwhile, Victoria has responded to his comments and insists that she isn’t ‘boring’ with her diet. “I mean, talk about making me sound boring,” she told Vogue Australia in 2022. “What he meant is that he’s never met anyone who is more disciplined with the way that they eat.”

I eat lots of healthy fat: fish, avocado, nuts, that sort of thing. I do drink alcohol, unless I have a reason not to. She also revealed she goes through detox periods. “I’ll detox from anything for three to six months where I won’t drink.” Her approach to everything, including eating, is admittedly extreme. “I’m quite extreme in anything I do, whether it’s eating or working out or drinking or not drinking.”

“This diet is very limited,” Cording points out. “That can lead to restrictive thoughts and feelings around food.” Keri Gans, R.D.N., author of The Small Change Diet, is also concerned about how tightly Victoria regulates her diet. “It’s a diet that consists of healthy foods, but for most people, it is not a healthy way of eating,” she says. “Her diet is overly restrictive, and for many individuals, it could be a sign of disordered eating.”

At the height of the Spice Girls fame and in the years that followed, Victoria was cruelly dubbed ‘Skeletal Spice’ and in her autobiography, she describes herself as an ugly duckling and a lonely teenager who became obsessive about her diet and body after the industry (and bandmate Geri Halliwell) encouraged her to seriously decrease her food intake in order to make her body smaller.

But conflating being healthy with your identity is the backbone of eating disorders like orthorexia, so I’m not okay with making healthiness a flex. Of course, we all want to be healthy and engage in health-promoting behaviors, but it can’t be the crux of who you are, because I was that girl when I struggled with orthorexia myself, and it made me incredibly sick. This assessment from someone who tried Victoria’s diet highlights the deeper psychological concerns.
