Los Angeles — Fellow drivers tackled and held a man at the scene of a fiery crash that claimed a woman’s life on the 10 Freeway Monday night. The collision near South Robertson Boulevard stemmed from aggressive weaving that sent vehicles slamming into the center median. One Toyota Prius erupted in flames upon impact, drawing a rapid response from the Los Angeles Fire Department just after 7 p.m.[1][2]
Aggressive Weaving Sparks Catastrophe
Construction worker Jacob Deegan trailed closely behind the Prius when the accused driver suddenly veered across four lanes of traffic. The maneuver clipped the rear of the Prius, propelling it and two other cars into the median. Flames consumed the Prius almost immediately, filling the air with thick black smoke.[1]
Deegan recounted the harrowing moments to reporters. The aggressive motorist had darted unpredictably through rush-hour congestion before the deadly sideswipe occurred. Eastbound lanes ground to a halt as the fire intensified, with witnesses reporting minor explosions amid the inferno.[1]
Witnesses Act Swiftly to Detain Suspect
As the Prius burned, Deegan grabbed a golf club from his vehicle and rushed toward the trapped driver. Intense heat forced him to retreat before he could shatter the window. Meanwhile, the man responsible bolted down the freeway, prompting a pursuit by outraged bystanders.[1]
Deegan led the effort to subdue him. "I did tackle him and I got him on the ground and I just asked him, ‘Hey, man, sit right here,’" Deegan recalled. "He kept trying to run off." Joined by others, including Eve Porinchak, they restrained the driver until California Highway Patrol officers arrived and took him into custody. Paramedics later transported the man to a hospital in unknown condition.[1][3]
Porinchak marveled at the solidarity amid the chaos. "I’ve never seen a fire that giant that up close before," she said. "There was a lot of black smoke and a lot of minor explosions. It was very, very hot. It lit up very quickly."[1]
Firefighters Face Inferno and Tragedy
Los Angeles Fire Department crews extinguished the blaze upon arrival around 7:15 p.m. They pronounced one woman dead at the scene, beyond medical help. A second victim reached a hospital in critical condition, while the detained driver received treatment elsewhere.[2][3]
"One patient was determined beyond medical help and deceased on scene. A second patient in critical condition has been transported to the hospital by paramedics. A third patient, reportedly detained on scene by bystanders, has been transported in unknown condition," fire officials stated.[2]
Freeway Chaos and Ongoing Probe
California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert, blocking all eastbound lanes west of Robertson Boulevard. Traffic backed up for miles, with drivers diverted onto surface streets. Investigators combed the scene with flashlights, gathering evidence from the wreckage wedged against the divider.[4][2]
Neither the victim nor the suspect has been publicly identified. Authorities have not disclosed whether impairment played a role. Witnesses expressed trauma over the event but praised the collective response that prevented the driver’s escape.[1]
Porinchak captured the sentiment shared by many. "Regardless of what the rest of the world says about us, we’re good people. L.A. has so many good people who will help strangers. Thank goodness for good people." The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of reckless driving on congested freeways, where split-second decisions can turn fatal.
