Detroit – Jarvis Butts, the man convicted of sexually assaulting and murdering 13-year-old Na’Ziyah Harris, was found dead in his prison cell just two weeks after receiving a decades-long sentence. The shocking development came amid ongoing efforts by authorities to locate the girl’s remains, which Butts had agreed to reveal as part of his plea deal.[1][2] His death leaves the victim’s family grappling with unresolved pain and unanswered questions about the final resting place of their loved one.
A Predator’s Long Shadow Over a Young Life
Jarvis Butts began targeting Na’Ziyah Harris as early as 2022, exchanging sexually abusive messages with the seventh grader at J.E. Clark Preparatory Academy.[1] By September 2023, the girl texted him that she had missed her period, and evidence showed he knew of her pregnancy by November. Prosecutors revealed that Butts searched online for abortion methods, including pills and even drinking red antifreeze, in the weeks leading up to her disappearance.[3]
On January 9, 2024, Na’Ziyah stepped off her school bus near Cornwell Street and Three Mile Drive on Detroit’s east side. Text messages placed her at Butts’ auto repair shop that day, where several witnesses saw them together. The next day, police tracked Butts to the nearby Rouge River area near 7 Mile and Berg, recovering her clothes – a pink jumpsuit turned inside out, a black jacket, and a red-and-black shoe – that appeared freshly discarded.[2][4] Her body has never been recovered.
Decades of Abuse Across Multiple Victims
Butts’ crimes extended far beyond Na’Ziyah. He faced charges in six separate cases involving the sexual assaults of five other young girls, with ages ranging from 4 to 13. One victim was as young as 4, while others included girls aged 7, 8, 8 or 9, and another 13-year-old.[2] Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy described him as a “classic and expert groomer and pedophile” upon his initial charging.[3]
Butts had a prior conviction from 2005 for assaulting two young girls. He also assaulted two others under 13 between 2012 and 2017. At the time, he was dating Na’Ziyah’s aunt, which gave him access to the family.[3] Originally facing first-degree murder and other severe charges related to Na’Ziyah, he pleaded guilty on February 12, 2026, to second-degree murder and multiple counts of criminal sexual conduct.

- March 26, 2026: Found dead in prison cell.
Sentencing Marked by Raw Family Anguish
Judge Victoria Hathaway handed down Butts’ sentence on March 12, 2026: 35 to 60 years for the murder, with credit for time served, plus 10 to 15 years on each of the five sexual assault convictions, all concurrent. His earliest possible release was set for 2059. As part of the deal, Butts provided a statement on Na’Ziyah’s body location, which Worthy deemed satisfactory, though details remained private.[1][4]
The courtroom filled with emotion as Na’Ziyah’s grandmother, aunt Marketta Harris, Butts’ own sister, and three assault victims delivered impact statements. Marketta Harris called him a “serial habitual predator” and lamented, “I’ll never be able to get to hold her again… a life for a life.”[2] Na’Ziyah’s father, Murvin Jennings, had already passed away after falling ill while searching abandoned houses and fields for his daughter.
Apparent Suicide Cuts Short Incarceration
Transferred to the Charles Egeler Reception and Guidance Center in Jackson, Butts was discovered dead in his cell on the morning of March 26, 2026. Prison staff administered life-saving measures, but they proved unsuccessful. Officials reported the death as an apparent suicide, with the Michigan State Police launching an investigation.[2][1]
The Detroit Police Department acknowledged the event, stating their homicide investigation continues. “Although the legal process ended with a conviction in court, our work is not done,” the department said. “We will follow all leads… to locate the body of Na’Ziyah Harris to help bring closure to her family.”[1]
Unresolved Grief in Wake of Predator’s Death
Family and advocates expressed mixed relief and frustration. Tamara Liberty Smith, a family friend, said, “I feel like justice hasn’t been served,” citing lingering questions that Butts’ death may prevent from being answered.[2] Na’Ziyah’s cousin Roxy Harris echoed the sentiment, noting two years of waiting for answers about her location.[3]
