Health officials in Denmark have tied a cluster of Salmonella infections to meals served at schools in the Hovedstaden region. Since April, eleven confirmed cases of Salmonella Enteritidis have been recorded, with most patients being children. The finding has prompted a coordinated response from national food safety and health agencies.
Who Has Been Affected
Seven of the patients are boys and four are girls. Their ages range from four to twelve years old, though three adults between twenty-one and sixty-three have also become ill. The median age across all cases stands at ten.
Interviews with patients or their families show that every sick person ate school meals at multiple locations in Hovedstaden. No other common exposure has yet been identified.
Genetic Evidence Narrows the Search
Whole genome sequencing performed on bacteria from the patients reveals they share an identical genetic profile, all belonging to sequence type 11. This close match strongly suggests a single source of contamination rather than separate incidents.
The same sequence type caused an earlier outbreak that sickened fourteen people across 2025 and early 2026. That investigation ended without identifying the origin, leaving open the possibility that the current cases stem from a persistent or recurring source.
Investigation Moves Forward
Three agencies are now working together: the Statens Serum Institut, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration, and the National Food Institute. Their focus remains on tracing the exact food items or suppliers that reached the affected schools.
Officials note that the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration merged with the agricultural and fisheries agency at the start of this year, a change that has streamlined some inspection processes but has not altered the current outbreak response.
Further sampling of school kitchens, food deliveries, and possible upstream suppliers is underway. Results are expected in the coming weeks.
Salmonella Risks in Everyday Settings
Salmonella bacteria often contaminate food without altering its appearance, smell, or taste. Children, older adults, and anyone with a weakened immune system face higher chances of severe illness if exposed.
Typical symptoms begin twelve to seventy-two hours after eating contaminated food and include diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fever. Most healthy adults recover within four to seven days, yet some cases require hospital care when dehydration becomes serious.
People who feel unwell after eating school meals or similar communal food are advised to contact their doctor and mention the possible Salmonella exposure. Special laboratory tests are needed for accurate diagnosis, as symptoms can resemble other common infections.
What matters now: Authorities continue to search for the precise source while urging schools and families to follow standard food-safety steps. The genetic link between cases gives investigators a clear target, yet the origin remains under active review.
