According to a 2023 McDonald’s corporate report, the answer is Mainland China, with 5,903 restaurants. This makes China the clear runner-up in the McDonald’s count, though the journey to get there wasn’t straightforward. China was also relatively late to the McDonald’s game, with the first location opening in 1990, three decades after the first international McDonald’s opened in Canada.

The first McDonald’s in the country opened in Shenzhen, a special economic zone that was intended to help slowly introduce foreign investment and market capitalism into the nation during its period of post-Maoist economic reform. The geopolitical landscape has reshaped McDonald’s presence dramatically in recent years. In 2022, the company shuttered its restaurants in Russia, where it had operated for more than 30 years, in response to the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, many western companies withdrew business from the country, including McDonald’s, who said that continuing to operate there was “no longer tenable, nor is it consistent with McDonald’s values”.
