Chick-fil-A: The Undisputed Champion

When it comes to fried chicken perfection, Chick-fil-A stands as America’s favorite fast food chicken sandwich chain in 2025 according to Yelp reviews. The Southern fried chicken chain has won people’s hearts by sticking to its core menu items and simply trusting in the quality of its food and service, topping the list of fast food chains in customer satisfaction for 11 straight years. What makes this chain truly special isn’t flashy marketing or gimmicky menu items – it’s their unwavering commitment to consistency.
At the end of 2024, Chick-fil-A hit $22.7 billion in sales despite having fewer locations than competitors, making it the third largest fast food chain of any kind in the entire country. By comparison, Popeyes was at only $5.7 billion and KFC only $4.9 billion, despite having more stores. Those numbers don’t lie when it comes to customer loyalty and satisfaction. The chicken sandwich that started it all remains their crown jewel, with that distinctive pressure-cooked preparation creating an unmatched texture that’s both tender and crispy.
Popeyes: Louisiana’s Finest

When Popeyes first opened in New Orleans in 1972, it was known as “Chicken on the Run” – and sales were less than dazzling. Adding some distinct spices to its recipe helped the brand stand out and gain traction. That gamble on bold Louisiana flavors paid off spectacularly. Today, Popeyes represents everything that makes Southern fried chicken legendary.
The chicken at Popeyes is exceptional – well-seasoned with a good amount of heat. The spicy flavors meld seamlessly with the brightness of the pickle, and the spicy mayo offers a tangy kick and a touch of creaminess. What separates Popeyes from the pack isn’t just the chicken itself, but the entire flavor experience. Their Louisiana fried chicken features buttermilk-battered chicken with an audible crunch and rich seasoning, and the brand has been rapidly expanding overseas, bringing American cuisine to the UK.
Dave’s Hot Chicken: The Spicy Sensation

Dave’s Hot Chicken ranks as number two on Yelp’s ratings and has seen huge growth in the past few years. This isn’t your grandmother’s fried chicken – it’s a modern take that focuses on heat levels and customization. Spicy chicken is their specialty, and nobody serves up a sandwich or tender destined to take away your senses for 20 minutes quite like Dave’s. If you’re in for a kick, Dave’s is the place for you.
The fried chicken has a crust so thick and aggressively crunchy that it holds up even under hot sauce and pickles. It’s also “much more flavorful” than the competition, according to fans, who like that you can adjust the spice level to your comfort. The chain has grown from humble origins to 283 locations at the end of 2024, opening about 80 locations in 2024 alone and expecting to open the same number in 2025. However, be warned – their “hot” level truly lives up to its name.
Raising Cane’s: The Tender Specialist

Raising Cane’s is now the third-largest chicken chain in the U.S. by sales, trailing only Chick-fil-A and Popeyes. The privately held company has leapfrogged KFC by keeping its menu simple and operating its own restaurants. Their approach is refreshingly straightforward – they do one thing exceptionally well: chicken fingers.
Raising Cane’s is experiencing “record-breaking” growth in 2025, opening 118 new restaurants in 2024. The tenders are perfectly crispy and golden on the outside and drippingly juicy on the inside. Fans are also crazy about the brand’s trademark dipping sauce. In 2024, Cane’s restaurants had an average unit volume of $6.6 million, more than double the fast-food industry average, though they’re still outstripped by rival Chick-fil-A, which reported an average unit volume of $9.3 million.
Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken: The Hidden Gem

Gus’s World-Famous Fried Chicken has the potential to one day live up to its name. This isn’t just another fried chicken fast food joint; it’s an institution. For a chain with just 40 locations across 14 states in the South and Southwest, you will be shocked at the quality of the food. What makes Gus’s special is their commitment to authenticity and spice.
Gus’s keeps it simple and traditional by sticking to fried chicken and sides. Excellence comes only from perfection, so you are only getting one style of fried chicken here. Thankfully, it’s got a kick and is loaded with a nice hit of cayenne spice. There is a dark golden brown color to the outer layer that you just won’t see anywhere else. One reviewer noted they serve “the best hot and spicy chicken I have ever had, much better than a Bojangles or Popeye’s ever thought about being.”
Huey Magoo’s: The Filet Mignon of Chicken

Huey Magoo’s calls itself the fillet mignon of chicken, and with how tender it was, this feels accurate. This is the place to go if you’re looking for an excellent, basic chicken tender that elevated the chicken tender rather than falling in line with an already great product. Their focus on quality over quantity sets them apart from many competitors.
The chicken is much better than Raising Cane’s, with real flavor and less breading. The chicken tenders have a great flavor and are cooked perfectly. The dipping sauce is made in house and not a pre-packaged sauce, and you can taste the fresh difference. Started by southerners Matt Armstrong and Thad Hudgens in 2004, the restaurant serves what it claims to be the best 3% of the bird – the tenderloin. It’s growing fast, having opened its 74th location in Springfield, Missouri, in April.
Church’s Texas Chicken: The Affordable Alternative

Despite only servicing the southern half of the country, Church’s Texas Chicken is a massive operation with 787 locations currently operating in the US, serving up an even more affordable fried chicken option than rivals Popeyes and KFC. While they might not win any awards for innovation, they deliver solid value for your money.
Church’s Texas Chicken serves two types of fried chicken – original and spicy – as well as a smokehouse chicken. The chain also has some unique side offerings, like fried okra, but the one standout on the menu is the honey butter biscuit. Diner reviews were generally positive, with one Reddit user saying, “their biscuits are particularly good, and their spicy chicken is almost as good as Popeyes and Bojangles.”
Bojangles: The Biscuit Specialist

At Bojangles, the tenders come with a biscuit that’s much better than Popeye’s – it feels more homemade and is definitely plumper with plenty of butter flavor. The Bojangles sauce is a honey horseradish, which is super unique. The texture was crispy without going overboard, and the seasoning and juiciness of the chicken are impressive.
The chain’s official full name is Bojangles Famous Chicken and Biscuits, which gives you an idea of exactly what to order there. The Southern chicken chain’s chicken biscuit sandwich has a lot of hype behind it, but what the customer gets doesn’t always live up to the legend. Their inconsistency across locations can be frustrating, but when they get it right, they really get it right.
Wingstop: The Wing Specialists

Wingstop is becoming the nation’s biggest wing chain, with more locations in the US than Buffalo Wild Wings as of February 2024. In estimation, this fast food chain doesn’t quite hit the same level of consistency. Sampling a number of selections from Wingstop shows they haven’t been impressed by the chicken and sauces.
The actual chicken wings are decent – they are juicy and meaty, as should be expected, but the boneless wings and sandwiches are remarkably dry, even when coated in sauces. Many of the sweeter sauces tend to be too sweet, while the spiciest ones lack a rounded flavor and just blast you with heat. The only real standout is Wingstop’s ranch dressing, which is one of the best dipping sauces in the chicken game.
Zaxby’s: The Inconsistent Option

When it comes to chicken restaurants, Zaxby’s is firmly in the middle of the pack. While the chicken quality is outstanding at some Zaxby locations, others fail with tough meat that just tastes old. It truly depends on the location and the time of day. This inconsistency makes it difficult to recommend with confidence.
The original Zaxby’s was called ZAX and opened in 1990 in Statesboro, Georgia, the joint efforts of two childhood friends, one of whom was named Zach. Their famous Zax sauce was so coveted that the very co-founder made the sauce at home and delivered it to locations personally. To date, the company maintains that the sauce is still manufactured in secrecy. While the sauce remains a draw, the chicken quality varies too much to earn a higher ranking.
PDQ: The Florida Favorite

If you live in Florida, then you know PDQ is where you can find some of the best fast food chicken in the country. With over 50 locations in the Sunshine State and more than a dozen more across New Jersey, New York, and the Carolinas, PDQ is serious about their chicken quality. PDQ stands for People Dedicated to Quality, and their 100 percent natural chicken is hormone-free, steroid-free, and never frozen.
Their Honey Butter Chicken Sandwich is absolutely delicious – crispy chicken dipped in homemade honey butter and served on a toasted brioche bun with crunchy pickle slices. They also craft all their sauces and salad dressings every day. However, PDQ was expected to perform well but didn’t land toward the top, and with this tasting in particular, PDQ did not hit the mark, placing second to last.
KFC: The Fallen Giant

In every metric considered, KFC missed the mark. The vibe of the restaurant was simply sad, and the tender very much matched the feel of the restaurant. Altogether, it didn’t taste particularly fresh. It had a rather chewy texture, and the breading was just barely there. Not to mention, the meat inside was dry and even stringy.
In recent years, there has been a noticeable decline in the average quality at KFC locations. They still have some of the best mashed potatoes and gravy in fast food, but the chicken isn’t as fresh as it used to be. The flavor of the chain’s signature spice mix is there, but the chicken breast is dry more often than not and the chicken tenders frequently taste like they’ve been sitting out for hours. It’s hard to see how the chain that put fried chicken on the map has fallen so far.
