Taco Bell’s Decades Menu Taps Into Y2K Nostalgia

Taco Bell introduced its Decades Y2K Menu in September 2025, featuring five previously discontinued items from the early 2000s. This wasn’t just another limited-time offer throwing random items at the wall to see what sticks. The menu launched nationwide on September 2025, reintroducing fan-favorites like the Cheesy Bean and Rice Burrito, 7-Layer Burrito, Chili Cheese Burrito, and Double Decker Taco, all for under three dollars. What really got customers fired up was the Caramel Apple Empanada, which had built a passionate fanbase pleading for its revival since debuting in the early 2000s.
Fans went so far as to start a petition after Taco Bell removed the Mexican Pizza in 2020, with nearly 200,000 customers signing to bring it back, which led to its permanent return in 2022, and fans even made a map of locations that continued to sell the chili cheese burrito after it was broadly removed from menus in the mid-1990s. That’s some serious dedication to discontinued fast food. The Decades Menu helped unite generations of fans who fondly remembered these items with a new era of fans who had yet to experience them.
McDonald’s Finally Brings Back the Snack Wrap After Nearly a Decade

During its earnings call in early 2025, McDonald’s announced the return of the popular Snack Wrap to its menu along with other chicken-focused offerings, with CEO Chris Kempczinski stating that there is “incredible energy for the return of Snack Wraps in the U.S., along with a few other markets.” Let’s be real, this comeback was long overdue. The Snack Wraps were much beloved and lamented when they left the menu, especially once salads were gone too, as they generally represented a lower-calorie option than McNuggets or other chicken sandwiches, and had a ten-year run from 2006 to 2016 nationwide.
The McDonald’s Snack Wrap was first introduced nationwide in 2006 and became one of the most beloved items by customers, but after employees expressed how complicated the menu item was to make, causing longer wait times, the company ultimately decided to discontinue it in 2016. The thing is, people never really stopped asking for it back. McDonald’s announced the return of the beloved Snack Wraps in 2025, featuring chicken strips drizzled with honey mustard, sprinkled with cheese, and wrapped in lettuce and a warm tortilla, sparking mourning and petitions for its return among fans.
Burger King Melts Make Their Cheesy Comeback

Burger King’s BK Melts were initially released in 2022 for a limited time before making another short-term reappearance in 2023, and the chain brought them back starting December 19, 2024, while supplies last. These sandwiches have garnered quite a following since their debut, honestly. Fans expressed being obsessed with the melts on social media, with comments like “Glad they’re back” and “I wish they all were permanently on the menu.”
The BK Melts cost four ninety-nine each and come in three varieties: the Classic features two flame-grilled Whopper Jr. patties, melty American cheese, caramelized onions, and Stacker Sauce between two slices of toasted bread; the Bacon Melt includes the same elements plus crispy bacon; and the Shroom n’ Swiss Melt, which debuted in December 2023. Burger King also brought back its churro fries in December 2024, which first appeared in October as part of an Addams Family Halloween menu, featuring fried dough coated in cinnamon and sugar served alongside chocolate sauce, with the return due to the dessert’s popularity.
TGI Fridays Looks to Its Roots With a 60th Anniversary Menu

As TGI Fridays celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2025, the chain filed for bankruptcy in 2024 but is looking to regain strength under leadership of CEO Ray Blanchette, and the team is looking to the casual dining chain’s roots for menu inspiration, featuring classics such as a half rack of ribs, burgers, chicken caesar salad, and boneless wings and fries, all priced at nineteen sixty-five dollars for two as a tribute to the restaurant’s founding year. I think what’s fascinating here is how TGI Fridays is using nostalgia as a survival strategy, not just a marketing gimmick.
For many restaurant chains, 2024 was a rough year as food prices climbed, Americans tightened their belts and opted to dine out less, but the outlook for 2025 seems to be cautious optimism as many chains fight for survival and look for creative ways to win back and hold on to customers. If you can still find a TGI Fridays open near you, consider yourself lucky, as the chain has closed a string of restaurants in recent years.
McDonald’s Revives Classic Desserts and Seasonal Favorites

McDonald’s has brought back two of its most iconic limited-edition, seasonal menu items: the McRib sandwich and the Holiday Pie. The McRib sandwich returned for a limited time to selected regional McDonald’s restaurants in cities across the U.S., including Miami, Dallas, Cleveland, St. Louis, Atlanta, Chicago, Seattle, and Los Angeles, consisting of seasoned boneless pork dipped in a tangy barbecue sauce, topped with slivered onions and pickles, all served on a toasted bun. It’s hard to say for sure, but the McRib might be the most discussed limited-time menu item in fast food history.
The McRib is the most-mentioned limited-time product online, higher than other evergreen items, particularly on social media, and interestingly, some claim Bitcoin and the S&P 500 tend to perform well after the McRib makes a comeback, with one post noting that every time McDonald’s brings back the McRib, markets mysteriously pump. That’s just wild when you think about it. McDonald’s UK also launched new McFlurry flavors in 2024 including a Milkybar Raspberry Ripple McFlurry and Munchies Cookie Dough McFlurry, featuring flavors recently launched by Nestlé which aim to transport customers back in time with some nostalgic, classic ice cream flavors.
What do you think about these retro revivals? Are restaurant chains simply cashing in on our collective longing for simpler times, or are they genuinely giving us what we want?
